Dan
From Vulnerability to Independence
Dan was just five years old when he came into the care of Gap Kenya from the Mwakirunge community in Mombasa. At the time, his mother was unable to provide for him and made the difficult decision to ask the charity to take him in.
Dan grew up in one of our foster homes, remaining in contact with his family while receiving the care, stability, and education he needed to thrive. He progressed through primary school, achieving strong results in his national exams, which enabled him to attend a national high school as a boarder.
Today, Dan is studying for a degree in Public Health at university. He is thriving in his studies and embracing the independence of student life, while still returning to the foster home during holidays—a place he continues to call home alongside his “brothers.”
Dan’s journey reflects not only academic success, but the lasting relationships built within the foster family. In messages to his foster parents, he expressed his gratitude for the love and guidance that have shaped his life and future.
“Your support has shaped me into who I am today and guided me towards success.”
