Stepping Stones Centre

A safe place for street-connected boys — and a stepping stone towards a safer, more hopeful future.

Stepping Stones supports street-connected boys in Mombasa through a structured day programme.

Around 20–30 boys typically attend Stepping Stones each day. Many return regularly, while new boys also come through our doors each week. Numbers fluctuate as children's circumstances on the streets change.

At Stepping Stones, children have access to:

Nutritious meals
Showers and hygiene facilities
Education
Medical care
Counselling and guidance
Recreation and a safe place to spend the day

Education & Routine

Children attend flexibly, allowing them to engage with support at their own pace. Their educational level is assessed and they learn in small groups using Kenyan curriculum-based materials.

For children who have never attended school, reading, writing and numeracy are priorities, whatever their age. Daily lessons also introduce routine, concentration and confidence in learning.

At the heart of Stepping Stones is our belief that every child needs to feel safe, valued and significant.

Through consistent relationships, clear boundaries and compassionate support, children begin to build trust, confidence and self-worth — and to see possibilities beyond life on the streets.

Moving Forward

Stepping Stones was created to be exactly that — a stepping stone.

When a child is ready, our team works towards the most appropriate next step. Wherever possible and safe, this means reconnecting children with their families. For a small number who cannot safely return home, foster family care may be possible.

Every child's circumstances are different. We meet them where they are and support them towards a safer, more stable future.
