Mwakirunge is one of the official dump sites for Mombasa waste. According to one of the municipal workers who manages the dump, there are around 500 people living on the dump site, many of whom are women and children.

They live off the food they scavenge from the dump site, food which is mouldy, rotten and stinking.  They also eat the paper food has been wrapped in or used during the cooking process! As the dump site is in a very rural area, drugs tend not to be as big a problem as the people here do not have access to them.

The dump is also a very hazardous place for the children. Acid is commonly dumped along with other industrial waste. Children often tread in the acid and receive severe burns to their feet, legs and hands. Medical treatment is not available to those without money so these injuries are often left untreated.
